Happy 2018 Solo Librarians!

Dear Solo Librarian Division Members,

Welcome to 2018! For those of you whom I’ve never met, my name is Holly Lakatos. I am the in-coming chair of the Solo Librarians Division. I am a court librarian in Northern California, and I’ve been a member of this division since 2012.

When SLA was established in 1909, the Association’s first stated goal was to “unite in co-operation all small libraries throughout the country.…” Today, while our global society is undergoing tremendous discord and cultural change, we must continue to strive to achieve that simple goal. As solo librarians, archivists, and information professionals, we may not have the assistance or understanding of colleagues at our places of work. However, through SLA and this Division, we can unite to help solve some of the information obstacles that librarians  face every day: lack of resources, lack of awareness, and lack of expertise. Together, we can work to answer some of the questions that our patrons ask. Together, we can assist society in developing the skills necessary to navigate the information abyss and identify facts from falsehoods. In fact, our motto is “Working Together for those Working Alone,” and I believe that every member of our division is open to assisting a fellow SLAer.

Our past leadership has done a tremendous job in keeping our Division together, creating amazing programs at the Annual Conference, and setting up channels for members to communicate with non-members (like our Google Group that replaced our listserv). This year, we want to build upon our success, and do more to ensure that the Division is doing its best for all our members. That means, we have some great committees that are beginning to develop non-conference programming, more career assistance, and recognition for the good work that our members contribute to the profession. We want your input; we want to hear your ideas. Please, please, please participate in SLA Connect, our upcoming member surveys, and the open forum at the end of each Division Board meeting.

Our first Board Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, January 11th at 11:00 am EST/8:00 am PST. Additional details will be posted in SLA Connect.  If you have questions that you’d like us to answer or comments you’d like us to read during the “Open Forum” portion of the meeting, feel free to email us beforehand at dsol.sla@gmail.com or post a response to the meeting notice in Connect.

I’m looking forward to working with you all this year!

Solo website converted to WordPress – check it out

After much learning, the SLA Solo Division website has been converted to Word Press.

Thanks to Daniel Lee for advice as well as the Webmaster for the Toronto Chapter site who answered my questions.

Any and all comments welcome.

If you want to post on the blog, let me know and I’ll see about setting it up.
